How do I calculate the hours between two times?
Enter the start and end of your appointment, journey or activity. Use 9:15 am, 21:15 or 9:15pm. The hours calculator subtracts the start from the end and shows the duration in three forms. It works with clock times, so the result describes the time between the labels you entered, rather than a countdown from the current moment.
For example, 9:00 am to 5:30 pm is 8 hours 30 minutes. By hand, count eight hours from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, then another thirty minutes to 5:30 pm. For a start at 8:45 am and an end at 12:15 pm, count fifteen minutes to 9:00 am, three hours to noon, then fifteen minutes: 3 hours 30 minutes. Leave the rate blank when you only need a duration; Copy result preserves the entered start and end times alongside the total.
| Start | End | Hours and minutes |
|---|---|---|
| 9:00 am | 5:30 pm | 8:30 |
| 8:45 am | 12:15 pm | 3:30 |
| Monday 8:00 am | Wednesday 2:00 pm | 54:00 |
How many hours are between an evening and the next morning?
A shift from 10:30 pm to 6:15 am crosses midnight. There are 1 hour 30 minutes before midnight and 6 hours 15 minutes after it: 7 hours 45 minutes altogether. When your end time is earlier than your start, choose Ends next day beside that session. The next-day label stays visible so an accidental am/pm entry does not silently become an overnight shift.
The same approach works for a late drive or an overnight study session. A trip from 11:20 pm to 5:05 am takes 5 hours 45 minutes by those clock labels. For an interval ending exactly at midnight, enter 12:00 am or 00:00 and select Ends next day: 10:30 pm to midnight is 1 hour 30 minutes. Midnight begins the following date; it is not noon. If the activity spans several nights, enter its actual start and end dates instead of treating every earlier end time as just one overnight interval.
How do I find the time difference between two dates?
Choose Between two dates and select a start date and an end date using the date controls. Keep the times beside each date. Monday at 8:00 am to Wednesday at 2:00 pm contains two complete days plus six hours, giving 54 hours. This mode makes the start and end dates explicit and supports intervals longer than one day.
Planning and scheduling often need this distinction. Friday at 3:00 pm to Sunday at 9:00 am is 42 hours: twenty-four hours to Saturday afternoon, then eighteen more to Sunday morning. Enter both dates even when the end clock label is later than the start label. The date mode includes weekends and all intervening calendar time; it does not remove nights or non-working days automatically. Across a month or year change, keep the full date rather than subtracting only the day numbers or the clock labels.
How do I enter am, pm or 24-hour time correctly?
In 12-hour time, am covers midnight through the morning and pm covers noon through the evening. Midnight is 12:00 am; noon is 12:00 pm. A bare 8:00 means 08:00, and a bare 4:00 means 04:00. Enter 4:00 pm or 16:00 for the afternoon. You can mix formats between fields because both become minutes from midnight before subtraction.
Now inserts the current local clock time into one field. Swap start and end exchanges that entry’s start and end times. In date mode, it exchanges the dates as well. Clock-only entries must be within a single day’s labels, from 00:00 through 23:59; 25:00 is a duration, not a clock time.
| 12-hour label | 24-hour label |
|---|---|
| 12:00 am, midnight | 00:00 |
| 9:00 am | 09:00 |
| 12:00 pm, noon | 12:00 |
| 3:00 pm | 15:00 |
| 11:00 pm | 23:00 |
Why can an hours result exceed 24 hours?
A duration can span several days even though a clock label repeats each day. Two identical clock labels can describe no elapsed time or a complete day. To measure 24 hours, choose Between two dates and put the end on the following date: Monday at 9:00 am to Tuesday at 9:00 am gives 24:00.
A clock-only session cannot exceed 24 hours. For 9:00 am to 5:00 pm the following day, use date mode to obtain 32 hours. Keep the two dates beside the times in your records so a later reader can distinguish a long interval from a same-day shift.
How do you calculate the time difference in Excel?
Put the complete start date and time in A2 and the complete end date and time in B2. Enter =(B2-A2)*24 in C2 and format the result as Number to obtain elapsed hours. Keeping both dates prevents the subtraction from losing whole days. Keep the result numeric so it can be used in later calculations.
For a result displayed in hours and minutes, follow the add time calculator’s Excel formatting steps. Full timestamps preserve multi-day intervals; time-only cells need the correct date attached before the same subtraction can measure an overnight shift.
Why isn't my time difference calculating correctly?
If Excel returns #VALUE! after a CSV import, inspect the timestamp cells before changing the formula. A timestamp may look like a date and time while still being text. Changing its display format alone does not convert it into a numeric timestamp. Remove leading spaces, then use Data > Text to Columns with a date order matching the imported values; Microsoft’s subtraction error guide explains text dates and mismatched regional formats.
For text already in a date/time format Excel recognizes, convert both timestamp cells to numeric values before applying the subtraction. Microsoft’s VALUE function documentation explains that unsupported text still returns #VALUE!. An imported time-zone suffix or unfamiliar date order needs parsing before subtraction. Preserve the date when converting a multi-day timestamp. If the result is valid but too small, inspect whether the source dates were lost or the result uses a clock display; formatting and input errors need different fixes.
Does daylight saving time change the hours between two times?
Yes, elapsed time can differ from the gap between clock labels. NIST’s daylight saving time rules describe the US spring change at 2:00 am on the second Sunday in March and the fall change at 2:00 am on the first Sunday in November. The clock skips an hour in spring and repeats an hour in fall where those changes are observed.
Across that transition, a 10:00 pm–6:00 am interval is eight hours by clock labels but can be seven or nine hours of elapsed time. This calculator uses wall-clock minutes, including in date mode. It does not apply daylight saving or time-zone offsets. For a journey crossing zones, times expressed in the same fixed offset describe the elapsed interval without mixing departure and arrival clocks.
What is the next step for billing these hours?
Enter the agreed hourly rate. Turn into an invoice opens an editable invoice after free registration, with one hours line for each positive work session. The description includes your work note and its start and end times; the quantity is the session’s hours after the unpaid break, and the rate is your entered hourly price.
Or make it without an account carries those session lines into the free invoice generator. In either editor, add the client, review the quantities and service descriptions, and finish the invoice details before downloading. Keep the time calculation with your work notes so you can explain the billed quantity.
Who uses the hours calculator?
Employees checking a shift
Compare the clock-in and clock-out times with your time log, subtracting an unpaid break once. For example, an 8:30 am–4:45 pm shift with a 30-minute lunch contains 7 hours 45 minutes of work. A week of shifts with overtime belongs in the time card calculator.
Freelancers recording appointments
Use actual start and finish times to measure a consultation, lesson or working session. A tutor meeting a client from 2:10 pm to 3:40 pm records 1 hour 30 minutes. Give the session a service description so that the invoice identifies the appointment along with its clock times.
Contractors measuring site time
A repair visit from 10:00 am to 12:20 pm contains 2 hours 20 minutes. A return visit from 1:15 pm to 2:45 pm adds 1 hour 30 minutes, for 3 hours 50 minutes on site. Separate start-and-end sessions leave the travel or waiting gap outside the worked quantity.
