Each duration becomes signed seconds. Add those integers, then carry groups of 3,600 into hours and groups of 60 into minutes. A negative sign applies to the whole duration. Display decimals are rounded; billing uses the full net duration.

How do I add hours and minutes with this calculator?

Enter one duration per entry, such as 1:45 for one hour and forty-five minutes or 1h 45m for the same length of time. Choose Add or Subtract beside each entry. A typed + or - sign takes priority over that entry’s operation, so -0:20 always removes twenty minutes. Blank entries are ignored, making it easy to leave space for another session.

Start with the sample, replace it with your own durations, or choose Clear all. Add an entry for each separate session of work, study or media. The result updates as you type. With seconds turned on, enter 0:12:30 for twelve minutes and thirty seconds; two-part values still mean hours and minutes. Optional labels such as h, m and s make the units explicit.

An invalid entry stays visible with its own message. The total then shows a subtotal of valid entries, and invoice actions wait until every populated entry is valid. Correct the indicated duration or remove it before using the total for billing.

How do you add three or more time durations?

Enter each duration on its own entry and choose Add for every duration you want to include. For 0:50 + 1:40 + 2:35, enter three entries; the total is 5:05. Continue adding entries for the remaining sessions. The calculation accepts up to one hundred entries, so you can total twenty entries without splitting the list into pairs.

Open Show the math to follow the running total. To correct a duplicate, remove the entry or set another entry to Subtract with the duplicated duration. Blank entries contribute nothing; a populated invalid entry leaves a marked subtotal until corrected.

How do I add time by hand and carry minutes?

Add the hours separately, then add the minutes. Every complete group of sixty minutes becomes one extra hour. For 1:45 + 2:30, the hours add to three and the minutes add to seventy-five. Carry sixty of those minutes into the hours column: three hours plus one carried hour leaves 4:15.

The same method works for a long list. For 0:50 + 1:40 + 2:35, the starting hours total three and the minutes total 125. Two complete hours fit into 125 minutes, with five minutes left. Add those two hours to the original three to get 5:05. Carry all complete hours, rather than stopping after the first carry.

The unit relationship is defined in NIST’s time-unit table: one minute contains sixty seconds, and one hour contains sixty minutes. The Show the math panel applies those relationships to your entries.

How do you add durations that total more than 24 hours?

Keep the result as accumulated hours rather than a time of day. For a total of twenty-seven hours, enter 9:30, 8:45 and 8:45 on separate Add entries: the answer is 27:00. It remains twenty-seven hours, rather than wrapping to 3:00. No start date or midnight adjustment is needed when every entry is already a duration.

The same applies when minutes remain: 18:30 + 12:45 = 31:15. Carry the extra minutes into hours, then keep every accumulated hour. If another app shows only the remainder after a full day, use its accumulated-duration display instead of a clock display; the Excel instructions below show one example.

How do I subtract time when I need to borrow an hour?

Subtract minutes from minutes and hours from hours. When the top minutes are smaller, borrow one hour and turn it into sixty minutes first. For 3:10 - 1:45, rewrite the first duration as two hours and seventy minutes. Seventy minus forty-five leaves twenty-five minutes; two minus one leaves one hour. The answer is 1:25.

Choose Subtract on an entry to remove a known duration from a larger total. For example, a recorded task lasting 2:15 with a duplicated 0:25 segment has a corrected total of 1:50. Keep the original entry and the deduction visible so the correction is easy to explain. If the deductions exceed the additions, the calculator preserves a negative result instead of replacing it with zero.

How do I add time durations that include seconds?

Turn on Seconds and enter three parts in the order hours:minutes:seconds. 0:02:45 + 0:03:30 gives 0:06:15: seventy-five seconds carry into one minute, then the five original minutes become six. A value such as 2m 45s works too. Keep the seconds switch on while editing values that contain seconds; switching it off flags those entries rather than silently discarding precision.

For video and audio, translate each clip length into this duration format before adding it. A media player’s 02:45 often means two minutes and forty-five seconds, while this tool’s two-part 2:45 means two hours and forty-five minutes. Type 0:02:45 or 2m 45s to remove that ambiguity. Whole seconds are supported; frame counts and fractional seconds need their own media timecode calculation.

Who uses the add time calculator?

Employees

Enter the lengths already recorded for individual tasks or sessions. A morning session of 2:20, a second session of 1:35 and an afternoon session of 3:10 total 7:05. This is useful when a task log has several durations but no single daily total. Use one entry per session so a missing or duplicate session is easier to spot.

For a whole week with breaks and overtime, use the time card calculator.

Freelancers and contractors

Combine recorded task lengths to bill a finished piece of work. For example, 1:20 of planning, 2:15 of work and 0:40 of revisions total 4:15. At an entered rate of $80 per hour, that net duration produces $340.00. These figures are a worked example; the calculator uses the rate you supply.

For a contractor’s completed job, choose Subtract for duplicated time or a session excluded from the charge. Keep that deduction beside the positive durations so the net quantity can be explained from the task log. Use a separate calculation when a different hourly price applies.

Choose a document layout from the freelance invoice template for your service details.

For contracted job work, start with the independent contractor invoice template.

Video and audio editors

Use one entry per clip or track, with Seconds enabled. A three-minute-forty-second introduction, a twelve-minute-twenty-five-second interview and a fifty-five-second ending total seventeen minutes. Enter them as 0:03:40, 0:12:25 and 0:00:55. Subtract removed sections to estimate a revised running length.

For an edited sequence, add only the retained durations and subtract known overlaps or crossfades. The tool totals your entries; it does not inspect a timeline or infer transitions.

How do you total time durations in Excel?

In desktop Excel, enter durations as time values in one column, then sum the range. For example, put 9:30, 8:45 and 8:45 in B2 through B4 and enter =SUM(B2:B4) in B5. Select the result, open Format Cells, choose Custom and enter [h]:mm;@. The result displays 27:00; brackets around h preserve accumulated hours beyond a full day.

For a deduction stored as a positive duration in B6, use =SUM(B2:B4)-B6. If B6 contains 0:30, the result is 26:30. Keep the input cells as numeric time values so the formula can sum them. This is a spreadsheet method for durations you already have, rather than a start-and-end-time calculation.

The SUM formula and accumulated-hour format are documented in Microsoft’s add or subtract time in Excel instructions; its desktop steps include the custom format needed for totals above twenty-four hours.

Why is my added or subtracted time total wrong?

Check the units before changing the arithmetic. For the difference between colon time and decimal hours, see the decimal hours calculator. Enter a duration for each task. Also check each operation: a leading sign in the text overrides the Add or Subtract control.

Minutes and seconds in a normalized duration run from zero through fifty-nine. If you type 1:75, the calculator offers 2:15 as an explicit carry action. Accept it when seventy-five minutes was intentional, or edit the entry when it was a typing mistake. Totals over 9,999 hours remain visible with a warning, while invoice actions pause for correction.

For the duration between two clock readings or dates, use the hours calculator.

How do I turn the total time into an invoice?

Enter an hourly rate to reveal the invoice action and an amount in USD. Billing uses the full duration, including seconds when present, rather than the rounded decimal display. A positive net total with valid entries can become an editable invoice. A zero or negative total stays available as a calculation but cannot become a positive billed-hours line.

Turn into an invoice opens an editable invoice after free registration with one Work time line for the net duration. Added and subtracted time become that line’s hours quantity, your hourly price becomes its rate, and the individual durations appear in the calculation notes. Or make it without an account puts the same net-hours line in the free invoice generator. Review the client and service details around it before downloading.

The invoice anatomy guide explains the fields around your hours line.

What happens if I subtract more time than I add?
The result keeps its minus sign. For example, 1:00 minus 1:30 is -0:30. The warning points you to the subtraction entries, and invoice actions wait for a positive net total.
Can I paste a whole time expression into one entry?
No. Use one duration per entry to combine addition and subtraction. For 2:40 + 1:30 - 0:20, create three entries and choose Add, Add and Subtract; the result is 3:50. A leading minus sign can also mark a deduction and overrides the operation control on that entry.
Can I enter minutes without entering hours?
Yes. Type 45m or 0:45 for forty-five minutes. With seconds enabled, type 45s for forty-five seconds. Explicit unit letters are helpful when copying short durations from notes or a media player.
