Conservative reverse pricing rounds upward to a cent and forward-checks the result, with at most two one-cent corrections.
How do you calculate Stripe fees and your net receipt?
Choose the payment method, enter the total charge in US dollars and select any applicable card options. The calculator estimates the processing fee and subtracts it from the charge to show your net receipt. Reverse mode starts with the net amount you want and finds a charge that covers the estimated processing fee.
These standard rates apply to Stripe accounts registered in the United States. The account’s registered country determines the price list. International-card and currency-conversion options represent independent fee conditions. The estimate covers a successful payment before refunds, disputes and additional products; the settlement schedule determines when funds become available.
Which Stripe US rates does the calculator use?
The Stripe US pricing page lists the standard processing rates below, checked October 13, 2026. The table covers a successful payment for a US account; each addition is expressed in percentage points.
| Payment condition | Published processing rate |
|---|---|
| Domestic online card | 2.9% + $0.30 |
| Manually entered card | Add 0.5 percentage points |
| International card | Add 1.5 percentage points |
| Currency conversion required | Add 1 percentage point |
| ACH Direct Debit | 0.8%, capped at $5 |
The card additions apply to the charge amount without repeating the $0.30 fixed fee. A manually entered international card requiring conversion uses 5.9% plus the single fixed fee. ACH uses its own bank-payment rate.
Why is Stripe's fee on $100 $3.20, not $2.90?
The $2.90 percentage charge is only part of the bill: Stripe also charges $0.30 per successful domestic online-card payment. On $100, adding those two components gives $3.20 in processing and $96.80 received. In formula form, fee = charge × 0.029 + $0.30; net receipt = charge − fee.
That fixed $0.30 takes a bigger share of a smaller sale. A $10 charge costs $0.59, or 5.9% of the payment. A $1,000 charge costs $29.30, or 2.93%. The published rate stays 2.9% plus $0.30; the effective percentage changes with the amount.
A $200 project deposit costs $6.10, and its $800 balance costs $23.50. Together they cost $29.60, compared with $29.30 for one $1,000 charge. Each collection brings another fixed fee. For installments of the same size, set the number of payments to divide the total evenly. For this deposit-and-balance schedule, run the two amounts on their own and add the fee dollars.
How much should you charge to receive a target net amount?
To receive $100 after domestic online-card processing, reverse mode finds a $103.30 charge. Its rounded processing fee is $3.30, leaving $100.00; a $103.29 charge leaves only $99.99. The calculation starts from the desired receipt and checks the rounded fee against the proposed total in cents.
The reverse calculation includes the percentage charged on the added amount as well as the fixed fee. Enter the intended receipt in Receive a target amount and use one payment. Keep the result with its payment method and selected options so the receipt estimate can be compared with the final transaction.
Keep three figures in your pricing notes: target net, proposed charge and estimated processor fee. The added amount also incurs processing, so a gross-up can exceed the published percentage. Surcharge rules are explained below.
How do international cards and currency conversion change the fee?
Turn on international card when that condition applies to the US card payment. The 1.5-percentage-point addition takes a domestic online-card rate from 2.9% to 4.4%. On $100, the estimated fee becomes $4.70 and the net receipt becomes $95.30.
Currency conversion is an independent condition. An international card without Stripe conversion uses only the international-card addition. With both international card and required conversion selected, the percentage is 5.4%; a $100 charge then costs $5.70 and leaves $94.30.
All amounts in this calculator remain USD. The conversion option adds the published processing percentage to the USD charge. For another account country or a negotiated pricing schedule, use custom pricing instead of changing a currency label and leaving the US rate in place.
What changes for manually entered cards and ACH?
Manual entry adds 0.5 percentage points to the card rate. A domestic manually entered $100 payment therefore costs $3.70 and leaves $96.30. Choose manual entry when the seller types the card details. A customer paying an invoice through an online card form uses the online-card method.
ACH Direct Debit uses 0.8% with a $5 cap and no card fixed fee. Below $625, use 0.008 × charge; at or above $625, the unrounded fee reaches the $5 cap. A $100 payment costs $0.80 and leaves $99.20; $1,000 costs $5 and leaves $995.
For a target $1,000 ACH receipt, charge $1,005: the $5 capped fee leaves exactly $1,000. Smaller receipts use the percentage until the charge reaches the cap. Reverse mode checks the chosen payment against the actual fee and its cent rounding. The cap applies to each payment, so dividing one large amount into several payments can change the combined cost.
How much is the Stripe fee on $100 and $1,000?
These examples use one successful charge on standard US processing pricing. Additional invoicing or platform costs belong in the other-cost field.
| Mode | $100 fee / net | $1,000 fee / net |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic online card | $3.20 / $96.80 | $29.30 / $970.70 |
| International card | $4.70 / $95.30 | $44.30 / $955.70 |
| International card with conversion | $5.70 / $94.30 | $54.30 / $945.70 |
| Domestic manual card | $3.70 / $96.30 | $34.30 / $965.70 |
| ACH Direct Debit | $0.80 / $99.20 | $5.00 / $995.00 |

Are Stripe Invoicing fees and platform fees included?
Stripe sells payment processing and Invoicing as distinct products. Stripe Invoicing pricing lists Starter at 0.4% and Plus at 0.5% per paid invoice. A $100 invoice therefore has a $0.40 Starter or $0.50 Plus product fee, in addition to its payment processing.
The standard result covers processing for the selected method. Another known dollar cost entered in the calculator reduces the receipt estimate. Enter the dollar cost of that additional product in this field. For a $100 domestic card payment with $0.40 entered as another cost, the $3.20 processing fee and the additional $0.40 leave $96.40.

How do freelancers, online sellers and contractors use Stripe fee estimates?
Freelancers
Use reverse mode to budget the receipt from a project payment. Record project revenue alongside the processing cost. The receipt estimate can help compare the dollars available under each payment method before you settle the price.
Online sellers
Select international card and currency conversion independently. Use the total processed payment, including any amount collected with the order, because the charge is the percentage-fee base. The displayed USD receipt is before any other entered cost.
For an international card charged in USD without Stripe conversion, leave conversion off. The result shows the USD processing cost.
Contractors and service businesses
Use ACH Direct Debit for a US bank-payment estimate and its capped reverse result for larger receipts. Compare it with a card calculation on the same total. Use the expected customer payment method for the comparison; compare the payment timing alongside the processing estimate.
Keep the agreed job total and description with the result. A larger payment may reach the ACH cap while a deposit stays below it. Match each receipt to its job stage.
Can you add the calculated fee to an invoice?
A calculated gross-up does not authorize a card surcharge. Visa’s US merchant guidance requires notice to the acquirer at least 30 days before surcharging. Mastercard’s rules prohibit surcharges on its debit and prepaid cards and describe credit-card caps and disclosures.
In New York, General Business Law §518 requires the posted total credit-card price to include the surcharge and limits it to the charge imposed on the business for that card use. The final price cannot exceed the posted price; a card price may be displayed beside a cash price. Other states have their own rules.
For PayPal payments, the US PayPal User Agreement prohibits an extra charge for accepting PayPal. Its handling-fee condition limits the amount to the handling fee for non-PayPal transactions and bars using that fee as a PayPal surcharge. Those contractual terms apply alongside card-network and state rules.
Can I negotiate a lower Stripe rate?
Stripe’s custom-pricing information identifies large payment volumes and unique business models as reasons to discuss a custom package. Published options include volume discounts, multi-product discounts and country-specific rates.
Once a rate is agreed, enter its percentage, fixed fee, minimum or cap in Custom pricing. Add known dollar costs in the other-cost field. Compare against standard pricing on the same charge and payment conditions.
Next step: turn the charge into an invoice
Once you have agreed the selling amount, add an item or job description and choose Turn into an invoice. After free registration, the charge and description open in an editable invoice. The invoice line uses the total charge; keep the estimated Stripe fee and net receipt in your pricing notes.
Or make it without an account. Open the free invoice generator and enter the agreed charge and work description. Use the same payment amount you chose above so the invoice matches the price discussed with the customer.
