Sample 1 — Deck repair with a deposit
Rivera Deck & Fence bills a $2,880 job in two lines: materials as one bundled figure ($1,840), labor as 16 hours × $65. The $1,000 deposit sits in the totals block in parentheses, so the client sees it was counted — and the invoice ends at a Balance Due of $1,880 nobody has to calculate. Notice the notes field: it thanks the client and restates the deposit date. Small thing; fewer "did you get my deposit?" emails.
Sample 2 — Bathroom remodel with change orders
A fixed-bid remodel plus two change orders — and each change order line references its written approval date (CO-1, approved 7/02). That reference is the whole game: when the final bill runs $2,000 over the original quote, the paper trail shows the client agreed to every dollar of it. Deposit subtracted, tax on the full amount, Net 14 because the relationship is established.
Sample 3 — Small service call
The humble two-line invoice: parts at cost, labor at 1.5 hours, due on receipt. For jobs under a few hundred dollars, this is all the format you need — adding more structure to a $164 invoice just makes it slower to pay. The lesson across all three samples: the size of the invoice should match the size of the job.
